Judge grants request for assessment for former broadcaster charged with robbery

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The lawyer representing a former broadcaster charged with robbery is arguing his client is not criminally responsible.

Stephen Vogelsang, 55, appeared in Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench Friday morning for a scheduled arraignment hearing.

During the hearing, James Rouleau acted as agent for Greg White, who is representing Vogelsang in the case. Rouleau applied for a forensic psychiatric assessment for Vogelsang, arguing he is not criminally responsible.

Vogelsang was arrested in Medicine Hat on October 21, 2017, charged with two counts of robbery. He is alleged to have robbed an RBC branch and a BMO branch in Medicine Hat on October 19 and 20.

Vogelsang was formerly a sports anchor and news director for what is now CTV Winnipeg, and was also a journalism instructor at Red River College.

White is arguing Vogelsang suffers from bipolar disorder, and at the time of the alleged offences, was suffering from a manic episode.

The judge granted the application for the assessment during the hearing.

Vogelsang sat in the prisoner’s box during the duration of the hearing, not saying a word. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges in Medicine Hat, but has previously elected to be tried by a judge and jury in the Court of Queen’s Bench.

He was granted bail on the Medicine Hat charges last year, but has been in custody in Saskatchewan, where he is also charged in connection with robberies in Regina and Saskatoon.

Vogelsang’s case returns to Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench on January 18, 2019.
