Province creates natural gas investment committee

EDMONTON, AB — The provincial government is creating a new investment team centred around the natural gas industry.

In a release sent out on Monday, the government announced the formation of a Liquefied Natural Gas Investment Team, which will work directly with industry members to further the goal of reducing barriers for natural gas investment projects.

“Whether we’re talking about oil or natural gas, the details are different but the story is the same. Albertans are getting pennies on the dollar because we can’t get our resources to international markets, and our biggest customer has become our biggest competitor,” said Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, Minister of Energy, in a news release. “We can’t sit on the fence like previous governments did. We must take the bull by the horns and fight for the full value of our natural gas.”

The investment team includes Greg Stringham, president of GS3 Strategies, and John Carruthers of the University of Calgary School of Public Policy. They will be meeting with industry leaders to find out what they need, and provide advice to government to help advance final investment decisions for liquid natural gas projects.

The team will report back to McCauig-Boyd in early 2019.

Monday’s announcement also saw the release of a report from the Natural Gas Advisory Panel, advising the province with 48 recommendations to help grow the natural gas sector in Alberta. The report can be viewed here.
