MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service arrested four people on Saturday during impaired driving checkstops.

Members of the Police Service’s traffic unit and patrol section, along with MADD, checked more than 1,000 vehicles during the checkstops.

One driver was charged with impaired driving exceeding .08, dangerous driving and evading police after police allege he fled the checkstop in his vehicle. Police pursued and arrested the driver a short distance away from the checkstop. Nobody from the public was harmed.

Police also arrested drivers on charges of driving while prohibited, breach of bail conditions, and impaired driving/refusing to provide a breath sample.

During the checkstop, 12 roadside alcohol screening tests were conducted, with one Immediate Roadside Sanction issued. A driver was hit with a 3-day licence suspension and had their vehicle seized after being found with a blood alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.1 milligram per cent.

Police also issued four tickets for various traffic violations, towed one vehicle for operating without registration and handed out 36 warnings for various traffic and Liquor/Cannabis Act offences.

Police are continuing to remind drivers that impaired driving laws are changing on December 18, which gives police more power to search for impaired drivers and increases penalties for people caught driving impaired.

Sgt. Clarke White speaks about the checkstops below.
