GAME NOTES: Tigers get ready to tangle with Regina on Saturday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Closing their recent road trip in emphatic fashion, the Medicine Hat Tigers return to the friendly confines of the Canalta Centre to face a familiar foe.

Getting their final week of games of ahead of the Christmas break started on Saturday night, the Tigers will take to the ice against the Regina Pats for the second time in less than a week.

Medicine Hat mounted a furious comeback against Regina last Sunday, shocking the Pats by a 3-2 final to begin their recent road swing.

Tigers vs. Pats

The Tigers and the Pats have met twice this season, both times in Regina. Medicine Hat took the first game 8-5 on October 26th and the second game 3-2 on December 2nd. The Tigers’ penalty kill is 83.3% effective (1/6) and the power play is 40% effective (4/10) against the Pats this season. Over the past five years, the Tabbies are 5-8-0-1 against the Pats and will look to improve their record Saturday. After Saturday’s contest, the Tigers and the Pats will meet one more time this season in Medicine Hat on Jan 11th, 2019.

View from Regina

The Regina Pats are 8-21-0-1 so far this season and lost 4-3 in a shootout Friday night against the Red Deer Rebels. Last week the Pats participated in a trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and acquired Jadon Joseph, Ty Kolle and seven draft picks while they sent Jake Leschyshyn and Nick Henry to Lethbridge. Both Joseph and Kolle picked up points against the Tigers during Sunday’s showdown in Regina.

Tigers Talent

Daniel Baker earned the second star of the night honours in his career best game against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday night. The 17-year-old Edmonton, AB native scored his first career WHL goal that night and picked up two assists for his first multi-point game. Baker is a calm, collected player with a great ability to the read the play. Look for Baker to make an impact on the defensive end for the Tigers on Saturday.

Captain’s Corner

Captain James Hamblin is the hard working 19-year-old forward who steps up every game and consistently gets the job done. The Edmonton, AB product is not afraid to battle for the puck, set his teammates up and find the back of the net himself. Hamblin has 14 goals and 19 assists so far this season and is the Tigers’ top point producer. The captain leads the team by example on and off the ice as he has been involved in every community outreach event the Tigers have been a part of this season. Look for the captain to lead the way for his team on Saturday.

Quick Hits

Last Saturday, Dec 1st was the Medicine Hat Tigers’ Annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Mads Søgaard picked up his first career WHL point by setting up James Hamblin to score the all-important first goal. A total of 1,990 teddy bears and 1,080 winter wear was collected from the ice. These items will be split between the Medicine Hat Health Foundation, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter and the Salvation Army.

Not only did Daniel Baker score his first career WHL goal on Wednesday night against the Warriors but he picked up his first multi-point game. Baker had a total of 3 points (1G, 2A) in that game and leads all Tigers rookies with 8 points (1G, 7A) so far this season.

Jordan Hollett picked up his first career WHL point by assisting on Joel Craven’s first goal of the season against the Warriors on Wednesday night.

Ryan Jevne scored his first game-winning goal of this season in overtime against the Warriors Wednesday night. In his career, Jevne has scored 5 game-winning goals including a career-high of 3 last season.

Mads Søgaard has been invited to the Danish selection camp for the upcoming World Junior’s tournament. Søgaard will depart for the camp after the Tigers’ game on Dec 15th.

Sixteen Tigers have a point or more in two games played against the Pats this season. Leading the way is captain James Hamblin with 5 points (3G, 2A) and Linus Nässen with 4 points (0G, 4A).
