Home builders in Medicine Hat could soon see struggles facing province

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Home builders across the province may be struggling, but the impact has been minimal in the gas city.

BILD Alberta said earlier this week that vacant new home starts are at an historic high and housing starts are at a 10 year low across Alberta.

CEO Carmen Wyton said while each community may be a little different, no city or town is immune to what’s happening.

Fewer homes are being built and companies have started to lay off staff.

In Medicine Hat, there are still a number of planned builds expected to happen, but contractors could start to see the impacts in the next few years.

“Medicine Hat is still relatively okay, but to suggest that there isn’t going to be some effect in the coming year or two years, I think it’s probably just a delay,” she said.
