$20,000 worth of maple syrup seized following pursuit near Nanton

NANTON, AB — Three people are facing numerous charges after RCMP in Nanton and High River seized numerous stolen items, including thousands of dollars worth of maple syrup.

On Wednesday at approximately 9 a.m., Mounties were patrolling in the area of Township Road 164 and Range Road 290 when they located a truck and cargo trailer that was allegedly stolen from Chestermere earlier in the morning.

When officers approached the truck, the driver allegedly fled and jumped into a waiting silver car, which fled the area.

The vehicle was brought to a stop near Highway22, just south of Black Diamond. Officers from Nanton, Claresholm, High River and Turner Valley assisted in the search.

Approximately $110,000 of stolen property was seized, including $20,000 worth of maple syrup.

Shelby Kalman, 20, of Claresholm is charged with operating a  motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public, Operating a motor vehicle while being pursuit, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and four counts of failing to comply with recognizance.

Shawn Mclaughlin, 28, of Lyalta is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and four counts of failing to comply with recognizance.

Char-lee Fernell, 23, of High River is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, and possession of a controlled substance.

Kalman and Mclaughlin were both remanded into custody. Mclaughlin was scheduled to appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Friday, while Kalman will appear on December 3.

Fernell was released from custody on a promise to appear, and will appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on December 3.
