MEDICINE HAT, AB — Downtown Medicine Hat is slowly becoming more colourful, thanks to a local art organization.

Artists with the local organization Street Art Works do murals all over the city, and the latest one was finished on November 21 on the side of the historic Assiniboia Inn.

Owners of the inn contacted the artists after obtaining a $5,000 beautification grant from the city. Any downtown business can apply for the grant, in order to get an art piece on an outdoor wall.

Jeff Goring, Amanda Oberacher, and Spencer Pleskie used only spray paint to complete the two art pieces in about three days.

Oberacher took the lead on the piece facing Third Street Southeasr, sketching and imaging the art work. She says she took inspiration from the train across the street.

“Definitely the location, being so close to the train yard,” says Oberacher. “They have so many beautiful travelling art works that go through.”

Jeff Goring and Spencer Pleskie took the lead on the wall facing South Railway street.

“It’s trying to keep kind of that old-school mural kind of added with a new-school feel,” says Goring. “So that’s why we did the Gas City.”

But one of their biggest incentives for the piece is to bring some more foot traffic into Downtown.

“You want something that people take pride in in the city,” says Goring. “That people will stand in front of, take a picture.”

“Hopefully this will travel some direction into the downtown core,” says Oberacher. “We want to keep in beautiful.”

Street Art Works also has their eye on a couple of locations in the city they’d like to beautify, including Fifth Street North by the Hospital, and the Monarch Theatre.
