MEDICINE HAT, AB — The family of a late entrepreneur in Medicine Hat has donated a legacy gift to support business students at Medicine Hat College.

The estate of Steven Murphy presented a $40,000 donation to the college to be split between two scholarships on Wednesday.

One scholarship is valued at $25,000, and will be awarded to a first-year student to support their education for four years. The second scholarship is valued at $15,000 and will go to a third-year student to help provide support for the final two years of their business degree.

Murphy passed away on January 26, 2016. He owned 11 Subway franchises throughout southern Alberta, and also owned a Beltone Canada franchise in Medicine Hat, which sold hearing aids.

Murphy’s family says he was a prominent supporter of the community, supporting charities such as the United Way. He also volunteered for athletic organizations such as the Hockey Hounds and the Medicine Hat Tigers.

“Steve believed very strongly in supporting the community that supported him and in giving back he felt he could help others,” says Dan Merkley, Steven’s brother-in-law, in a news release. “He was an integral part of not only the community, but his family. He will be truly missed.”
