MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Drug Coalition in partnership with the Salvation Army hosted their first art day in the Salvation Army’s resource centre on Wednesday.

Open to everyone, it was meant to bring some dignity and compassion to people struggling with drug addiction.

Participants were encouraged to paint their depiction of addiction, with some deciding to create memorials for loved ones that they’ve lost to drug overdoses.

Paint, canvases and other resources were available to everyone, including current and recovering addicts, family members and general community members.

Nicholas Baumann with the drug coalition says this helps people understand addiction, and how to help.

“It just gets everybody on the same page of whats going on in the Hat,” says Baumann. “It helps them with hope, there’s always hope for people, no ones a failure.”

More art days are expected to be hosted at the resource centre in the future.
