MHPS reminding public to be skeptical of online deals

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding shoppers to keep their eyes peeled for deals that seem too good to be true, especially when looking online.

Officers say shoplifting happens this time of year. Thieves tend to target things like clothing, cosmetics and electronics.

These items pop up on sites like Kijiji and buy and sell groups for cheaper than what they’re being sold for.

Sgt. Paul Taylor with the Medicine Hat Police Service said if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is.

“It affects all of us, because to recover the losses of this from the theft of these items, the stores will increase their prices, so it’s going to affect us all in the long run,” he said.

Taylor suggests doing price comparisons, or buying items from legitimate retailers.
