Raiders tab seven goals on Tigers to sweep season series

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers climbed within a single goal of Canada’s top junior squad on Friday, but were unable to complete a third period comeback against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Three Raiders goals were allowed over the final 10 minutes of the third, as the Tigers fell in a 7-3 decision at the Canalta Centre.

Less than three minutes into the contest, Raiders rookie Ozzy Weisblatt hopped on his own rebounded pass in the slot and beat Jordan Hollett to make it a 1-0 game for the Raiders.

One of the WHL’s most dangerous snipers made it 2-0 before the midway point of the first, with Brett Leason extending his point streak to 23 games with a tap in goal.

In what was a chippy affair between the Tigers and Raiders, Ryan Chyzowski and Brayden Pachel dropped the mitts near the end of the opening period for the evening’s first fight.

After both teams headed off for the first intermission, they got right back to the fisticuffs with Bryan Lockner and Kody McDonald squaring up early in the second frame.

Prince Albert showed off why they possess one of the country’s top offensive units 41 seconds into the period, as Leason provided a no-look drop pass to Parker Kelly at the side of the net for his eighth of the year.

Medicine Hat fell into a 4-0 hole less than a minute later while on the power play, with netminder Ian Scott providing a breakaway pass to Leason for his second of the night.

The Tigers finally spoiled Scott’s evening with 8:17 left in the second period from Josh Williams, who shifted from the forehand to the backhand to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Fans thought the Tigers scored another marker in dying seconds of the frame to make it a 4-2 game, but after review the referees determined it was a no goal to keep it a three-goal Raiders lead.

Two minutes into the third period, Medicine Hat made good on their fourth power play of the night courtesy of a five-hole shot from Lockner to make it a two-goal game.

The Tigers kept the pressure on with 12:10 left in regulation, being rewarded with a Ryan Jevne rebound goal to pull the home side to within a single marker.

Medicine Hat’s momentum came to a screeching halt with just over nine minutes remaining, as Pachal let a shot go from the point that fooled Hollett to make it a 5-3 game.

Hollett’s night came crashing down over the next two minutes allowing goals from Kelly and Aliaksei Protas, getting the hook for Mads Sogaard with 7:39 left.

Sogaard stopped both shots he faced in relief, but wasn’t enough to stop the Raiders from earning a 7-3 victory in Medicine Hat.

Suffering one of his worst losses of the season, Hollett gave up seven Prince Albert goals on 31 shots.

Failing to make up any ground in the Central Division on Friday, the 10-12-1-2 Tigers sit in the final wildcard position with 23 points.

Medicine Hat is hoping some time on the bus will serve as a refresher on Saturday night, travelling to Red Deer to battle the division-leading Rebels at 7:00 pm.
