MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Linden Cup Christmas Classic is returning this weekend, for what could be the final time.

The annual event, now in its fifth year, returns Saturday at the Family Leisure Centre, with the goal of raising money for the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank. Last year, the event raised $21,000.

The event features a free family skate from 11:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., with the Linden Cup charity hockey game beginning at 5:15 p.m. There will also be a bucket draw during the event.

Keith Gronning, the man who spearheaded the event, says he is planning to step back from the event after this year, and is looking for someone to take over the main organization of the event going forward.

“I’m 100 per cent okay with it continuing on in the future, but with a couple of little kids, a new business and everything, I need to take a step back from it,” he said. “My time, I only have so much of it. But, I’d very much like it to continue, but as long as we don’t have that person to step up, then it might be the last year, or it just might change into an entirely different event altogether.”

CHAT News Today caught up with Gronning, who spoke more about the event and its growth over the past five years.
