First death this season from influenza confirmed in Alberta

CALGARY, AB — Alberta Health Services has confirmed the first death from influenza during the 2018-2019 flu season.

According to the weekly influenza report, one person has died from the flu in the Calgary zone. Calgary also continues to lead the province in hospitalizations due to influenza, with 200 people being hospitalized in that area since the start of the season.

The South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, has the lowest number of laboratory confirmed cases of influenza this season. According to the most recent report, 57 total cases have been found.

The South Zone has also only seen three hospitalizations so far this season. Edmonton has had 48 people sent to the hospital so far, while the North Zone has seen 22 hospitalizations, and the Central Zone reporting 18 hospitalizations.
