Former police commission member pleads guilty to assault

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former member of the Medicine Hat Police commission facing an assault charge has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge

Rolf Traichel received one year of probation and a $100 victim surcharge after pleading guilty to one count of assault in Medicine Hat provincial court on Monday.

Traichel, 45, was originally charged with assault causing bodily harm in May 2018. The incident resulting in the charge occurred in 2016.

In August, Traichel was charged withfraud over $5,000, money laundering and possessing proceeds of crime in an unrelated investigation. According to police, Traichel allegedly defrauded the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education out of more than $1 million from 2010-2016.

Traichel served on the police commission from 2012 until 2017.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on the fraud charges on December 4.
