Gerlach, Blades top Tigers for second time in less than a week

SASKATOON, SK — For a second time in four nights, the Medicine Hat Tigers had no answer for Nolan Maier and the Saskatoon Blades.

The 17-year-old net-minder was named the game’s first star after a 37-save performance, backstopping his Blades (13-7-2-0) to a 4-2 victory over the Tabbies.

Medicine Hat (9-9-1-2)  has now lost three straight, which began with last Friday’s 3-1 setback to Saskatoon on home ice. They’ll play their second match of a four-game road trip Wednesday night in Prince Albert, taking on a Raiders team who has yet to lose at home this season.

Saskatoon’s goal scoring came from former Tiger Max Gerlach, who also scored in last Friday’s win in Medicine Hat, Kyle Crnkovic, Chase Wouters and Kirby Each.

Crnkovic, a rookie from Chestermere, AB, gets credit for his first career goal. Former Tiger Gary Haden, who was traded to the Blades three weeks ago, also found the scoresheet with a helper on Wouter’s eventual game-winner.

Alternate captain Ryan Chyzowski collected both markers for the Tigers, snapping a five-game scoring slump. His second of the night came with just 22 seconds left to play, cutting the Blades lead to 3-2, but Dach’s empty-netter with a single second to go sealed the deal for the home team.

The Tabbies had no shortage of power-play opportunities as well. Saskatoon was short-handed nine times through the game, but Medicine Hat only connected once.

Saskatoon, meanwhile, failed to score on four power-play opportunities.

Jordan Hollett made 33 saves in the loss.

Medicine Hat now turns its attention to the best team in the CHL — the Prince Albert Raiders, who boast a remarkable record of 17-1-0-0. P.A. is also riding a 10-game winning streak.

Game time from the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert is 6:00 p.m. MST.
