MEDICINE HAT, AB — Students and staff at Medicine Hat College took time to mark International Education Week on Thursday.

During the morning, a business class at the college set up posters in Centennial Hall, marking the end of a class project. That afternoon, an international showcase took place.

“In order to celebrate International Education Week, my students have focused on a global city, and looked at the changes in the global city as a result of the movement from rural to urban centres,” said Tara Williams, a business instructor at the college.

Shirley Richardson, one of William’s students, focused on London and wealth inequality in that city, and how it has widened the gap between the rich and the poor.

“It was really interesting to see everybody’s cities, and the different aspects that they brought to it, and all of the things we’re learning around the world,” she said.

Medicine Hat College has approximately 2,500 students enrolled at the school. Last year, 10.7 per cent of full time enrolled students were outside of Canada.

Both Williams and Richardson say international students add lots to the college.

“I think it’s really important, especially because we have a lot of international students here,” said Richardson. “In all of my classes, there is a lot of international students, and I think it’s really cool that we are promoting that, and that we have such great acceptance of everybody.”

“I think you can learn a lot about different cultures, about resiliency, and adaptation, and how to adapt to other environments, and other people,” said Williams. “It’s a great learning environment.”
