MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Sport and Event Council fielded questions from the community for the first time last night.

The organization, aimed at helping attract more provincial and national events to the region, held its first ever stakeholder meeting at Medicine Hat college, attracting several attendees from community organizations, who were able to ask questions and learn about the role of the council

“I’m more than pleased, and in fact, excited about the response we got,” said Ron Webb, co-chair of the council. “(There was) tremendous turnout from the stakeholders, some good questions in terms of how the Sport and Event Council and the working committees can assist them, and some good ideas of things we should have a look at for the next year. We’re excited.”

During the meeting, the council confirmed they intend to work with surrounding communities, not just Medicine Hat.

The council will also look into ways to bring professional sporting events, such as curling, hockey and golf, to Medicine Hat.

Although no official events were announced on Tuesday, Webb says there have been an increase in possible bids for events.

“We’ve certainly have been approached,” he said. “We have been working with some groups in the community who are looking at putting forward some major proposals.”

Webb says the council plans to host similar meetings annually.
