EDMONTON, AB — Alberta Education says it will begin developing its revamped curriculum for Grade 9 earlier than originally planned.

According to a news release from the province, Grade 9 will now be developed alongside the middle year curriculum, which includes Grade 5-8.

“Our stakeholders asked us to consider this shift so we would have a more cohesive approach to the development and implementation of our middle years and junior high curriculum,” said Education Minister David Eggen in a statement. “Accelerating these timelines means we will have our Grade 9 curriculum nailed down earlier which provides benefits in the classroom sooner to help students prepare for the transition to high school.”

The original plan saw curriculum developed for students in Grades 5-8 followed by Grades 9-12.

Curriculum groups are expected to begin work on the Grades 5-9 curriculum this month.

The province began developing new curriculum in language arts (English, French and Français), mathematics, social studies, sciences, arts and wellness in June 2016.

The Grade 12 curriculum is expected to be finished by 2022. A date for the new curriculum to be implemented has not yet been set.
