MEDICINE HAT, AB — A No Stone Left Alone service will be taking place Wednesday morning in Hillside Cemetery.

The service, which runs from 10 a.m. – noon, will see more than 900 people place poppies on headstones of soldiers in the cemetery. Students from several schools, along with military members, and local dignitaries will take part.

The No Stone Left Alone Service was first held in Medicine Hat last year. Services have been held across Canada since 2011.

The tradition dates back to 1971 after a dying mother, who was a veteran, asked her daughter to remember her each year on Remembrance Day. Every year since her mom’s passing, she placed a poppy on her headstone, soon participating with her family. The woman spent many years explaining to her family why other headstones did not have a poppy, she decided to ensure all of them did. The woman reached out to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, who gave his blessing for the idea.

Motorists are reminded there will be processionals up and down the main grounds of the cemetery during the service, and to also watch for buses and vehicles entering and leaving the grounds onto Highway 3.
