Chokecherry parking lot acquired by private developer

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat City Council has approved the sale of 403 second street SE, also known as the Chokecherry parking lot.

The lot was purchased for $459,000 by the same person who purchased the adjacent property, the former Parker’s Countrywide Furniture location.

Kidae Kim and Deokki Kim of Lethbridge acquired the 60,000 square foot building in approximately June of this year.

While no information has been released on the future plans for the site, it’s currently zoned for commercial use, so retail locations are encouraged.

However, the location could become anything with Councils approval.

“The amount of uses, different uses that could go on there,” says Mayor Ted Clugston. “The skies the limit.”

The purchase does present one issue, all of the Chokecherry parking passes will be discontinued as of November 30, 2018.

“I’ve already received emails saying ‘why would you take my parking spot away, why would you be so mean’,” says Mayor Ted Clugston. “But of course this is a sale of 459 thousand dollars.”

Mayor Clugston adds there are plenty of underutilized parking areas in downtown.

The sale will be finalized as of December 3, 2018.
