Mayor frustrated with provinces actions on off-leash site

MEDICINE HAT, AB — City Council reviewed the plan for the Saamis Archaeological site aka Kin Coulee Park during their meeting on Monday.

The plan involves converting the area to on-leash only as of January 1 2019.

Although Council accepted the report for information, the province directed the city to protect the site and take necessary actions.

The site is one of the largest First Nation camps in southeastern Alberta, and has a large amount of cultural material just below the dirt surface.

Mayor Ted Clugston was visibly upset about the issue, saying the city didn’t have a choice in the matter.

“I am getting extremely frustrated with the province and other levels of government for downloading and pushing these issues onto the city,” says Mayor Ted Clugston.

He said he’s been having issues with higher levels of government lately, particularly for imposing change without giving the city a voice.

“Same with everything else,” says Clugston. “Same with the supervised consumption site, same with the legalization of marijuana, the city did not do this.”

Mayor Clugston recommends anyone upset with the decision contact the local MLA, Bob Wanner.
