ASIRT investigation launched in connection to Lethbridge arrest

LETHBRIDGE, AB — The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has launched an investigation into a recent arrest made by a member of the Lethbridge Police Service.

The arrest, which occurred on October 28 following what police describe as an out-of-control party at La Cite Des Prairies in the 600 Block of 21 Street SE. Various confrontations occurred and an officer was involved in a physical altercation with a young man from Brooks on the scene.

Peyton Thomas Kale Many Shots, 18, is facing charges or assaulting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer and disarming or attempting to disarm a pace officer in connection with the incident.

A 37-second video of a portion of the altercation was later circulated on social media. After the video was reviewed, a notification was made to the Director of Law Enforcement under section 46.1 of the Police Act in relation to matters that are deemed serious of sensitive in nature.

An independent ASIRT investigation was also launched.

“I have the utmost confidence in our officers and the training we provide,” said Deputy Chief Scott Woods in a statement. “Transparency is critical to maintaining the public’s trust and as a Service we welcome this independent investigation by ASIRT.”

Lethbridge Police say they will not comment on the investigation going forward to protect the integrity of the investigation.
