MEDICINE HAT, AB — The unemployment rate in Medicine Hat continues to stay below the provincial average, according to recently released numbers from Statistics Canada.

The numbers show an unemployment rate of 4.6 per cent for Medicine Hat in October 2018, down from 5.1 per cent in September 2018.

Last year at the same time, the unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent.

Statistics Canada cautions against month-to-month comparisons for Medicine Hat’s data, owing to the small sample size.

Medicine Hat also contains the lowest unemployment rate among Alberta cities. In Calgary, the unemployment rate sits at 8.2 per cent, while Edmonton’s is at 6.3 per cent, unchanged from September 2018.

Provincially, Alberta’s unemployment rate is 7.3 per cent, the third highest in Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador currently has the highest unemployment among provinces, with a 12.7 per cent unemployment rate. Nova Scotia is second with 7.7 per cent.

Nationally, the unemployment rate sits at 5.8 per cent.
