Dental office running Halloween candy buy-back program

MEDICINE HAT, AB — With Halloween in the books for another year, many homes in Medicine Hat likely contain a large pile of candy, chips and other sweets.

Now, a local dentist’s office is giving families a change to remove some of the excess treats from their home, in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of their children developing cavities.

Southside Dental, located on Strachan Road, has launched a candy buy-back program.

“For every pound of candy children bring in, we’re going to give them a dollar, up to $5,” said Shelley Brooks, clinic manager at Southside Dental. “What we want to do is have the kids enjoy the activity of trick-or-treating, without having that sugar resting on their teeth for the next two weeks.”

Brooks says the time immediately following Halloween is one of the busier times of the year for dentists, and says the buy-back program is a way for kids to help keep their teeth clean.

“We’re definitely going to see an influx of children with toothaches and cavities in the next upcoming month,” she said. “We’re big on prevention, and we want to make sure the kids are protected.”

Brooks says the shop is accepting all candy, but is not accepting soda cans. Children can enter to win a classroom movie party as well when they drop off candy.

The candy will be donated to the Medicine Hat Food Bank and to soldiers overseas, says Brooks.

The candy buy back will run until November 9th.
