Prince Charles praises Gambians for regime change

BANJUL, Gambia — Britain’s Prince Charles is applauding Gambians for overturning two decades of autocratic rule during his first stop on a West African tour.

On Thursday, Prince Charles called the regime change that ousted longtime dictator Yahya Jammeh an “important milestone.”

In February, Gambia was accepted back into the Commonwealth of Nations, which is made up mostly of countries that were once British colonies.

Gambia’s former leader had withdrawn the country in 2013, accusing the organization of being a “neo-colonial institution.”

While in Gambia for a three-day visit Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also plan to visit a holiday resort in an effort to revive Gambia’s tourism sector. The country was once a popular beach destination for British nationals but took a hit amid the country’s political turmoil.
