Bike thefts appear to be on the rise in 2018

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Bike thefts seem to never slow down in Medicine hat, and statistics from 2017 compared to now prove that.

Last year roughly 130 bikes were reported stolen in the city.

As of October 2018, Medicine Hat is on par with that number, and is even expected to exceed it.

Medicine Hat Police say the obvious thing to do is always lock up your bike, or keep it inside.

However, there’s an extra step bike owners can take.

“If we do have it reported stolen we enter it on CPIC, that’s the national criminal computer system,” says Inspector Joe West. “If we come across a bike that we suspect is stolen, we’ll run the serial number and it’ll actually come up stolen.”

Inspector West recommends everyone takes down their bikes serial number. He adds to always report it to the police service.

“I would suspect that if we had 130 bikes reported, I would venture to guess there’s been at least that many that haven’t been reported.”
