STRATHMORE, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs ran into a hot goaltender on Saturday night and unfortunately for the club, that was enough to snap a three-game win streak.

Medicine Hat outshot the Strathmore Wheatland Kings 34-27, but were unable to find the tying goal in the third period and dropped a 3-2 decision.

Wheatland Kings blueliner Hayden Vander Ploeg put the home side on the board with 6:32 left in the first period, registering his third of the season on the power play.

It remained a 1-0 game well into the second period, with Mackenzie Fritzler potting his first of the year with 2:45 left in the frame.

A wild bounce off the end boards changed the momentum of the game late in the frame, as Strathmore’s Adrian Kusu beat the buzzer with one second left to put the Wheatland Kings ahead 2-1.

Less than five minutes into the third, Strathmore extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to Robert Butterwick beating Cubs goaltender Brett Vanderveer.

Cubs leading scorer Chandler Aleman made things interesting less than a minute later to cut the deficit to a single goal, but Strathmore would wind out the clock to pick up the victory.

Strathmore goalie Brett Willan made 32 saves on 34 shots to pick up the win, while Vanderveer allowed three goals on 27 shots.

Seeing their win streak ended on Saturday, the Cubs now hold a 4-5-2 record and sit in fifth place in the HJHL Southern Division.

Medicine Hat will have a shot at redemption on Sunday afternoon, as the home-and-home series shifts back to the Kinplex with puck drop between the Cubs and Wheatland Kings set for 2:00 pm.
