REDCLIFF, AB — Member of the Riverview Golf Club will vote tonight on whether or not to dissolve the club.

The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. It is expected members of the club will share what happened with a recent meeting with Redcliff Town Council.

The club has amassed $405,000 in short-term debt, and have met with town council twice for in-camera sessions about help for the club.

Redcliff Mayor Dwight Kilpatrick declined an on-camera interview Thursday afternoon, but said council had previously declined to help the club.

However, Kilpatrick says he believes the club is an asset to the town, and adds he doesn’t believe the possible dissolving of the club would have an impact on property values of nearby homes.

CHAT News spoke with several members of the course Thursday afternoon after they had finished their rounds.

All spoke about the friendly atmosphere at the club.

“For me, it was a working man’s course,” said Terry. “You didn’t have to wear a collar every time you came and played a round.”

“I find the Redcliff Golf Course a friendly bunch of people,” said Carl. “The atmosphere is good. You can come here and feel like family.”

“It’s been a friendly, blue-collar, golf course. That’s why I’ve stayed,” said Gil.

However, they are concerned that a vote to dissolve the club would have a negative impact on the town, and are hoping council would step in to help out.

“That’s what everyone is hoping for,” said Terry. “It’s the town of Redcliff, it’s Redcliff’s golf course. It’s not just a member’s golf course.”

“I’m sure many of these new houses around here wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the golf course,” said Gil. “I think it’s going to be devastating to the community as a whole.”

“I live in Medicine Hat, and I shop a lot at Home Hardware, the green houses, I go there all of the time,” said Carl. “If I wasn’t coming to the golf course, I wouldn’t be doing that really.”

The meeting will take place in the club house at 6:30 p.m.
