OYEN, AB — Nearly one month after his disappearance, police have still not located a missing man from Bindloss.

Carter James Schlaht, 32, was last seen at a home in Bindloss at 11:30 a.m. on October 1st.

Police, family and search and rescue organizations searched the area from both the ground and the air in the week following the search. A search also took place near CFB Suffield.

Officers searched throughout the Oyen detachment area, 10 kilometres north of the Red Deer River and south to Medicine Hat, along both Highway 41 and near the South Saskatchewan River.

Corporal Kirk Fisler with the Oyen RCMP say they believe Schlaht has left the Oyen area. They have also sent his information to a Canada-wide missing person search and sent his information to Canada Border Services Agency and the Department of Homeland Security in the United States.

“He’s not in trouble, it’s more or less to make sure he’s okay,” Fisler said, noting if Schlaht or his vehicle arrive at the border, it will be flagged to officers. “If he does try to cross the border, they will notify us that he is at the border, and they’ll detain him so we can talk to him and make sure he’s okay, that’s all that is.”

Fisler adds they continue to update Schlaht’s family about the status of the search.

“They’ve let us know they’re pleased with what we’ve done,” he said. “They were actually a little taken aback that we’ve done so much, in my interaction with them. I feel that they understand that this can be a difficult thing to do, especially if it’s someone who doesn’t want to be found or has decided he wants to be left alone.

“At this point in time, we’re still searching, not so much in our area, but in other areas, and we have a be on the lookout for notice and that missing persons notice that went to everyone in Canada.”

Schlaht is Caucasian, stands 6’3” tall and weighs 178 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a dark blue/black hoodie, blue jeans, a black ball cap and light brown work boots.

Schlaht may also be driving a red 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, with an Alberta licence plate YJR695.

Anyone with information about his disappearance is asked to contact their local police detachment or the Oyen RCMP at 403-644-3505.
