Province updates liquor regulations

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The province updated its liquor regulations earlier this week and it means there are some new options and flavours available.

The government has been working closely with AGLC on modernizing the rules.

Bars and restaurants will now be allowed to mix liquor products with different ingredients, including herbs, spices and fruits.

Along with the changes, Albertans will be able to make their own beer or wine at licensed facilities and take it home.

Owners and operators at senior complexes can allow residents to drink their own supply of liquor within their other rooms and common areas.

People attending theatre shows will be able to order a drink after the final curtain call, as long as the venue provides it.

Trampas Brown with the Esplanade said it’s something they’ve looked into in the past.

“We tried it years ago doing, kind of, I guess, after parties if you will and we never really found there was a lot of traction out there,” he said. “So it’s something we will likely look at trying again (…) but people seem to want to go out and hit our local businesses and socialize after the shows.”

Brown adds the Esplanade is looking at infused alcoholic beverages and said it’s something they’re hoping to include in the near future.
