MEDICINE HAT, AB — Laurent Desmarchais not only holds the course-record at Desert Blume Golf Club, the Quebec native is also a two-time national college champion.

The AL Boomerang product carded a final round 68 on Friday, easily taking the CCAA National Golf Championship individual men’s title. It comes one day after Desmarchais set a new course record on a links-style track, signing off on a 66 following the third round. His four-day total of 275 (-13) was capped off with a birdie on the final hole.

Striking gold individually isn’t where his hardware ended, however. Desmarchais also played an influential role in the Boomerang’s nine-stroke victory in the men’s team-division, awarding d’André-Laurendeau the CCAA banner.

Conner Watt of the Humber College Hawks finished second individually, and also earns silver with his fellow teammates.

The men representing the Medicine Hat College Rattlers placed 11th out of 12 of the best teams in the country.

Matt Taylor, representing the black and gold for the second year, paired his third-round 67 with a 73 on Friday. The Hatter finished tied for ninth at +1.

In the women’s bracket, Emily Romancew of John Abbott College went wire-to-wire to clean up the individual title. She finished +10 for the tournament, rounded out with a final round 73.

Shaye Leidenius finished 2nd individually, and served a valuable role in clinching the gold medal for her Red Deer College Queens. RDC finished 16 shots ahead of the Rattlers, made up of Becky Martin, Sierra Zukowsksi, and Nicole Schultz.

Although the ladies must relinquish the banner to their ACAC counter-parts, their silver medal is the first national podium finish in MHC history.

Martin entered the final round trailing Romancew by six shots, but struggled on her opening nine. The two-time All Canadian posted a 44 on her outward nine, but closed out the tournament in tremendous fashion with a three-under 32 on the back.

Zukowski and Schultz both carded their best rounds of the week. Zukowski, playing in her second national championship, finished 11th individually with a 79. Schultz, a veteran of three national appearances, lit it up on the back nine with a 36 to post 80 on the day, finishing 13th in the nation.
