MEDICINE HAT, AB — Temperatures in the mid-20’s, and a golf course in prime condition created ideal scoring conditions for the second round of the CCAA National Golf Championship at Desert Blume Golf Club on Wednesday.

Connor Watt of Humber College in Toronto paired his opening round 71 with a 68 to hold a one stroke lead at the halfway mark. Three are tied for second, including Daniel Campbell of the UFV Cascades, and teammates Olivier Menard and Laurent Desmarchais of the AL Boomerang.

Matt Taylor continues to lead the charge for the men’s team out of Medicine Hat College. The Hatter sits 17th individually after signing off on a 74 on his second round. Taylor closed his Wednesday with a roar — draining an eagle on the 18th to better his opening round by a single stroke.

Derek Whitson shaved nine strokes off his opening round to sit tied for 41st. After Tuesday’s somewhat discouraging 85, the Paralymic sledge hockey player walked in with a 76 — his best round of his college golf career.

Becky Martin continues to linger near the top of the women’s individual leaderboard. The two-time All-Canadian Rattler finished her final five holes at one-under par, signing off on a 79 to sit six shots back of leader Emily Romancew of the John Abbott Islanders. Teammate Sierra Zukowski bettered her opening round by five strokes, shooting 83 on Wednesday to sit in a five-way tie for 11th.

It was a tale of two nines for Rattlers veteran Nicole Schultz. The three-time national competitor bettered her front nine score by ten strokes on the back nine to card a respectful 86. The Olds product sits 16th individually, seven strokes outside of the top 10.

These three ladies are all helping position MHC in a good position to potentially lift the banner by the end of the week.

The Rattlers sit second in the women’s team portion — three shots back of the RDC Queens at +39. The UBC Okanagan Heat are further back in the bronze medal position at +47.

Round three from Desert Blume Golf Club begins mid-morning, baring a frost delay, on Thursday.
