MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta Health Services is advising Albertans to roll up their sleeves and protect themselves and everyone around them this flu season.

The first influenza clinic opened up on Tuesday afternoon at Higdon Hall, giving Albertans the chance to be immunized against the flu.

Another clinic is scheduled Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The vaccine is free for all Albertans aged six months and older.

In addition to the clinics, the shot can be administered at a pharmacist’s office to anyone over the age of five.

Last year, more than 1.2 million vaccines were administered in Alberta. The South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, had the lowest number of vaccines administered by AHS, with 92,391.

A total of 192 people in the South Zone were admitted to the hospital with lab-confirmed influenza, with seven deaths reported last year.
