MEDICINE HAT, AB – For almost three decades an annual celebration of science has brought kids and their parents together, and over the weekend families got the chance to flex their mental muscles.

Hundreds toured through stations at Medicine Hat College on Saturday for the 27th annual Praxis Family Science Olympics.

Families were able to complete hands-on activities and experiments aimed at explaining science in a way that will stick with kids long-term.

Local parent Rod Dorn took his family down to the event including his three boys, and said it’s a chance to see what areas of science his kids are taking an interest in.

“This gives us an opportunity to do some things that we wouldn’t normally do,” said Rod. “Lots of creative displays here and things, everything from magnets, to boats, to catapults. So, it gives us lots of ideas about how to keep them busy.”

Dorn’s six-year-old son Tucker took quite the interest in the home building booth, as well as an experiment showing how rain clouds are made.

“Made rain clouds [out of] dye and shaving cream,” said Tucker.

Education students from Medicine Hat College were able to get hands-on experience themselves, as they ran many of the booths on Saturday.

Rod said free events like the Science Olympics gives families a chance to spend time together without having to break the bank.

“This is a great activity for the family, lots of interesting activities to do and lots of fun,” said Rod. “It gets us out of the cold weather for the day anyways, that’s nice to be inside and with other families learning.”

Organizers believe this year’s event drew over 200 scientists through the doors of Medicine Hat College.
