MEDICINE HAT, AB – Strong defence led to potent offence for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers basketball teams on Saturday, winning a pair of games at the ‘Snake Pit’ over Olds College.

Getting the evening started off on a strong note, the Rattlers women’s basketball team scored 35 points off of turnovers to win their second game of the season by a 75-59 final.

After a slow start, the Rattlers offence came alive midway through the first quarter with Kendell Kuntz driving the bus with 10 points over the opening 10 minutes alone.

Leading 26-15 after the opening quarter, Medicine Hat was able to get some timely baskets from Kiana Mintz to take a 40-30 lead into the second half.

Kuntz added 10 more points to her totals in the third quarter, while Medicine Hat was able to limit Olds College to just nine points heading to the fourth quarter.

Broncos starter Brittney Thibeaux came alive with 12 points in the fourth to try and get her team back in the game, but the Rattlers led by Paige Cooper off the bench were able to hold the fort and win 75-59.

Cooper was named Rattlers player of the game with 12 points off the bench, while Kuntz was 7-for-19 from the field for a team-high 23 points.

Improving to 2-0 on the season, the Rattlers are the only women’s team in the ACAC South Division to hold an undefeated record to begin the year.

It was a balanced attack for the Rattlers men’s basketball team meanwhile, as they rebounded from a rough opening quarter to win big 85-65 on Saturday.

Medicine Hat burned two timeouts in the first quarter after struggling to generate offence, eventually trailing the Broncos 17-10 at the break.

The Rattlers enjoyed a much better second quarter by shooting 55 percent from the field, but were only able to enjoy a one-point lead over Olds College at halftime 34-33.

Despite only playing six minutes in the third quarter, Medicine Hat’s Jaamel Slack hit three shots to add eight points to his totals and extend the Rattlers advantage to seven points.

Medicine Hat’s bench showed their depth over the final 10 minutes, combining for 12 points to help give the Rattlers a 20 point lead and their second win of the season.

Five Rattlers were able to score in the double digits, including Slack who had a game-high 21 points in just 16 minutes of work.

Two-way returnee Osato Obaseki also had a great night at both ends of the court, finishing his evening with 10 points and 19 rebounds.

Also holding a 2-0 record to begin the season, the Rattlers men’s team is tied with the SAIT Trojans for top spot in the South Division.

Both Rattlers squads will be back at the ‘Snake Pit’ on Saturday night, taking on the Briercrest Clippers at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
