27 runners qualify for cross-country provincials

CARDSTON, AB — Several local runners have qualified for Cross Country provincials.

The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association South Zone Championships were held in Cardston on Wednesday. Multiple students at area schools finished in the top 18 in their divisions, earning a spot in Provincials next week.

Eagle Butte High School saw the most students qualify for provincials with 16. In the junior ranks, Josie Drefs was the only girl from the school to qualify, finishing in 9th place, while Brandan Olson (5th), Kaden Rath (6th) and Levi Hart all qualified in the junior boys category.

In the intermediate category, Tianha Blaquiere finished in sixth place to earn her spot at provincials , while Gavin Derksen (16th) and Aiden Heller (17th) qualified for the boys.

The majority of those who qualified from Eagle Butte were in the senior category. Terry Pearson (4th), Caleb Lawson (9th), Derien Larsen (10th), Max Sept (11th), Kade Kleinknecht (12th), Daniel Drefs (13th), Mason Appell (15th) and Austin McDonald (16th) qualified in the boys category, while Karli Snell (6th). qualified for the girls.

From Hat High, Hannah Smith ( 5th), Eli Smith ( 8th) and Ben Lloyd (12th) qualified in the intermediate division, while Maggie Carrier (10th), Jayden Smith (14th) and Jack Bjarnason (18th), qualified in the senior’s category.

Rachel Regier from Crescent Heights High School finished in 11th place in the junior girls category to qualify. She will be joined by seniors Bethany Regier (7th place) and Jacob Krueger (2nd).

Jill Laing and Stephanie Laing from Monsignor McCoy finished in 14th and 15th place, respectively, to qualify in the senior girls category.

ASAA Cross Country provincials take place in Vermilion on October 20th.
