MEDICINE HAT, AB — Crescent Heights High School is playing host to some of the top volleyball teams in the region this weekend.

The school is hosting its annual Senior and Junior Varsity girls Volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday, with 20 teams competing altogether. In addition to the Vikings, teams are coming in from Brooks, Foremost, Raymond, Stirling and Eagle Butte High School, who are sending two teams in the senior varsity ranks.

Hat High and McCoy will be competing in the junior varsity tournament, which features 10 teams.

“It’s always an awesome experience to have the home tournament,” said Scott Galloway, who coaches the senior girls team. “We get a lot of support from our school population and of course teachers will come out and support the girls too, it’s more convenient for them to come and watch a game. The girls are all really excited.”

Beth Mulder, a Grade 12 student on the team, says the team has one goal in mind for the tournament.

“I hope we can make it to the finals and pull off a big win,” she said.

Throughout the weekend, the school will be collecting donations for cancer research, and teams and fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Galloway says the event is aimed at promoting good citizenship among the athletes.

“Even as young as these girls are, they all know someone who has been affected by cancer,” he said. “They all buy in, they know it’s a worthy cause, and they really get involved in it.”

Galloway adds they’re hoping to raise $1,000 in donations this weekend.

The tournament gets underway on Friday at 4 p.m. The gold medal game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
