RED DEER, AB – They didn’t score the first goal of the game, but the Medicine Hat Midget AA Hounds made up for it with three periods of offensive dominance against the Red Deer Elks.

Medicine Hat threw 66 shots on the Elks during Sunday’s contest, pulling out a 7-3 win to rebound after a 3-2 loss in Lacombe the previous day.

Silas Buijs needed only 35 seconds to open the scoring for Red Deer, sniping on Hounds goaltender Nate Hoffman to get the Elks rolling.

The Hounds picked themselves up by their bootstraps though, potting back-to-back goals from Matt Lafferty and Connor Miller to give Medicine Hat the lead just 2:41 into a wild opening period.

With only 6:30 gone in the period, Brandon Kasdorf scored an unassisted marker for already his third point of the game and a 3-1 lead for the Hounds.

Nearing the midway mark of the first, Medicine Hat grew their lead even larger with a Levi Schlosser maker from Ryley Manz and Brandon Hauck to put the Hounds up big at the intermission.

It took until the 10:20 mark of the second period for that 4-1 lead to break, with Hounds forward Brayden Anderson scoring his first goal of the season to make it a four-goal contest.

After a Jacob Milne slashing minor, the Elks were finally able to get back on the board following a Connor Fenton power play goal with 3:40 remaining in the second period.

Red Deer’s Connor Sholdice gave the Elks some hope with his second goal of the year with 7:28 left in the third period, cutting the Medicine Hat lead to 5-3.

That would be as close as Red Deer would get however, as Medicine Hat picked up goals from Kasdorf and Austin Klimosko over the final two minutes of regulation to get back into the win column.

Kasdorf led the Hounds attack with two goals and two assists on Sunday, while Lafferty and Hauck each had multi-point outings in Red Deer.

Aside from a shaky start, Hoffman had a decent day between the pipes with three goals allowed on 21 shots against.

Moving to 2-1-0 to start the SCAHL season, the Hounds will get ready for their home opener on Friday night when they welcome the Okotoks AA Oilers to the Kinplex at 7:15 pm.
