Watson reflects on first season as professional

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Sage Watson is already looking ahead to 2019.

Watson, 24, recently completed her first season as a professional hurdler, and is in town visiting family in time for Thanksgiving. It’s her first Thanksgiving at home in six years, but she will be returning to Arizona shortly to resume training.

There were no major international tournaments, so Watson put most of her time into maintenance and preparing for next year. She also became a Nike sponsored athlete.

However, the 400 metre hurdler also suffered a stress injury in her foot this summer, which prevented her from defending her Canadian Championship.

“Right now, I’m doing really well,” said Watson. “It’s my off-season, so I’ve been seeing doctors, getting my foot taken care of and seeing a nutritionist, making sure everything is firing on all cylinders so I can be ready for next year.”

Watson did get close to hitting personal bests in the 400 metre hurdles this year, before injuries occurred (in March, she recorded a personal best in 400m). However, she already has the 2019 World Championships in sight.

“Those will be at the end of September next year,” she said. “This time next year, I’ll be in ‘Go’ mode preparing for those. Just changing my season this year will be to get ready for those late September championships.”
