New options for recycling at four-plexes

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Some four-plexes in the city don’t have recycling carts, and the reason might surprise you.

The decision to include individual carts is made when each structure is built… without any major input from tenants.

When the city rolled out 23-thousand blue carts across the city this summer… only four-plexes with individual grey garbage carts were eligible.

The decision to include individual carts is made when each structure is built… without any major input from tenants.

As a result, any residence with one communal garbage bin did not receive blue carts.

However, the city says if residents are interested in carts, they could take a closer look.

“If there is a four-plex where they have a communal garbage bin and they haven’t received the blue recycling carts and they are keenly interested in receiving the blue recycling carts we could take a look,” says Brian Murphy, general manager for environmental utilities. “I can’t commit that we would be able to make that conversion but we certainly would be willing to review that circumstance.”

Despite the confusion with four-plex locations, the city says the recycling cart roll-out was a huge success.

In fact, in the first three months of the program, the city has seen a 47% increase in the amount of recyclable material collected compared to this time last year.
