UPDATE: Police respond to “serious matter” on Elm Street

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat police were called to a “serious matter” on Elm Street Southeast Tuesday evening.

Officers responded to a home in the 1100 block of the street just after 6 P.M.

Police say one person was found deceased inside the house.

The death is not considered suspicious at this time.

Investigators say it appears the person died of a likely drug overdose and the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

Police said they won’t be releasing information about the identity of the individual and that they are working on contacting next of kin.

Police responded to nearly a dozen overdose calls between September 1, 2018 and September 25, 2018.

Officers have also had to use the drug Narcan 49 times between January and August 2018, which helps to reverse the effects of an overdose.
