Animal shelters in desperate need of foster homes

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A major influx in cat and kitten intakes is making two Medicine Hat animal rescue organizations desperate for foster homes.

The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre posted on it’s facebook page yesterday that it’s received 50 cats and kittens in the last two weeks.

In addition, Persian Dreams has see so many cats that it’s only accepting medical emergency intakes at the moment.

Both organizations say far too many un-neutered cats are roaming the streets, leading to a significant increase in strays.

A possible reason for the influx is the very early warm spring causing many kittens to be born early. Those un-neutered stray kittens are now old enough to have their own litters, leading to a repetitive cycle.

The new animals are taking up space in the shelters quickly, so new foster homes are critical.

“We find a home for one cat and the same day or the next day after we’ve cleaned everything up, the next cat is coming in,” says Samantha Lole, president of Persian Dreams. “We’re having to rely on those foster home so much more.”

“We dont turn away an animal,” says Lisa Bamhare-Petrick, kennel hand at APARC. “So if we have to we’ll find more and more fosters so if people want to come in and fill out foster applications it would really get the ball rolling.”

APARC has also put out a call for donations of towels, linens and kitten food to accomodate the needs of new cats and kittens in the shelter.

Persian Dreams says their main need is foster homes, but kitten food is aways appreciated.
