MEDICINE HAT, AB — There were events taking place all over the province on the weekend for Alberta Culture Days.

On Sunday in Medicine Hat the Miywasin Friendship Centre hosted at Metis Kitchen Party at Police Point Park’s Interpretive Centre.

Sabina Prince, cultural coordinator at the Miywasin Friendship Centre, says Culture Days is a chance to share the Metis culture.

“A lot of misinterpretations can be talked about the Metis people. So explaining the culture, and the dances, and just really displaying the indigenous culture throughout Alberta,” said Prince.

Prince explains that there are some misconceptions in that they are just cooking, but actually the party has nothing to do with that.

“So what happened in a Metis household was the biggest room was always the kitchen,” said Prince. “So when we were playing music, everybody with all their instruments, and any instruments could come in the kitchen and play.”

Prince says some of the dances taught today included the red river jig, the sash dance and the broom dance.

Everyone started the day learning the dances outside, but they moved inside due to the weather.

Families were also able to cook some bannock outside over a fire.
