MEDICINE HAT, AB — Runners and walkers braved the cold for The 22nd Annual CIBC Run for the Cure.

209 participants had the option of a one or five kilometre course through Echo Dale Park.

Rita Pasiciel, run director, says there was just over $33,000 raised at this year run.

Pasiciel added that as an organizer she gets to hear some amazing stories from cancer survivors, but says it’s still an issue many Canadians deal with.

“One in eight women are still diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though since 1987 there’s been a 44% reduction in the amount of breast cancer, that was kinda the height. 72 people are diagnosed in Canada everyday,” said Pasiciel. “So those numbers are still disheartening but at the same time the research that’s going on we’re having breakthroughs all the time.”

Pasiciel hopes at some point, breast cancer will be history.

Carmen Dowdell has participated the run for a few years, but this year’s meant a little more.

“My cousin just passed away September 10th of this month, this year, of stage five breast cancer. It kinda meant something more to me this year,” said Dowdell

Dowdell says she was dealing with a lot of emotion when she crossed the finish line.

“It was good. I had tears in my eyes,” said Dowdell. “It’s freezing out, and I have a cold, but it’s not even a fraction of the pain that she was in. I’m going to booker through and did it for her.”
