Bandits shut out Thunder 3-0 to open AJHL Showcase

Sep 29, 2018 | 10:51 AM

CAMROSE, AB – Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) scored the game-winner in the first period, and Pierce Charleson (Aurora, ON) stopped all 20 shots he faced for his second Junior A shutout, as the Brooks Bandits (5-1) extended their winning streak to five with a 3-0 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder (2-4) at the AJHL Showcase on Friday night.

With the win, the Bandits moved back into a tie with the Calgary Mustangs for first place in the AJHL South division.

Lee’s game-winner came 13:49 into the game when William Lemay (Marieville, QC) took a puck away at the end boards and flung it in front to the Canisius commit, who one-timed it past Drayton Valley goalie Shawn Parkinson top shelf to put the Bandits up 1-0. It was the only goal of the first, in which the Bandits outshot the Thunder 7-2.

In the second, Luke Bast (Red Deer, AB) charged down the wall and set up Mack Hancock (Kingston, ON) at the side of the net, whose point blank stuff attempt popped by Parkinson and in behind him to double the Bandit lead at the 9:15 mark.

Parkinson was perfect the rest of the way, with the Thunder also getting a major opportunity late in the 2nd when Ryan Mahshie (Stoney Creek, ON) was ejected for a major penalty for charging when he checked a Thunder player into the end boards. But the Bandits killed it off, going a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.

To seal the deal, Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) forced a turnover at the red line and scored on an empty Thunder net with 8 seconds left in the game for a 3-0 scoreline.

The Bandits outshot the Thunder 29-20 in the game, and went 0 for 3 on the power play.

Their next action is Saturday afternoon at the Encana Arena as they cap off their showcase schedule with a 3:30 PM puck drop against the Whitecourt Wolverines in a rematch of the 2017 AJHL Final. Pre-game coverage starts at 3:15 PM on Real Country 105.7.
