Dino-dash for charity

MEDIICNE HAT, AB — It was a race for the prehistoric ages.

Nineteen women dressed in inflatable Tyrannosaurus Rex costumes did their best to complete a 60 metre race for charity Sunday afternoon.

Everyone who attended the event had the opportunity to place bets on which dinosaur would win with the proceeds going to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta.

Tracy “Rowdy Rex” Stroud, event organizer, participated in the race and came up with the idea after being tagged in post on Facebook.

“A friend of mine, I have a nickname T-Rex,” said Stroud, “So, she posted a little thing on my Facebook page and she said ‘Oh I didn’t know you were racing in this event’ and it was on NBC Sports. It was a whole bunch of T-Rex’s racing down in the United States.”

Stroud re-posted the video for fun asking if anyone would race with her in Medicine Hat, not thinking it would lead to anything.

“All of a sudden a bunch of ladies posted on my page that ‘Yes I’d love to do that. That would be so much fun,’” said Stroud. “Then some other friends posted that ‘You know I don’t want to race but I would pay to see you gals race.’ So I thought that well let’s do it for charity.”

Stroud says they had raised over $2,000 in online donations before the event.

If you add that to the amount donated at the race Stroud says that total should be over $3,000, and they plan on racing again next year.

“We had so much fun and I think you know just this was our first year, it was put together so quickly and as word gets out, I think we’re going to have a lot more people come on board. So yeah, I think we’re going to do it again next year.”
