MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 27-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing multiple charges following an alleged hit and run in the city’s southeast.

It happened on Cypress Way Southeast at approximately 11:45 p.m. Officers were called to a hit and run, and spotted a Jeep that had been hit.

A damaged Ford Escape was found a short distance away.

The driver of the Escape took off on foot, but was caught by police.

Sgt. Clarke White with the Medicine Hat police service says teamwork among officers, along with tips from the public, were essential to apprehending the suspect quickly.

“Everyone that’s working, patrols, K9 and everyone else kind of jumps in and does their thing, and together it usually ends up in pretty good results,” he said. “And again, with help from the witnesses, we were able to locate the accused vehicle quite quickly, and get that track underway and ultimately locate the suspect.”

White says the Ford Escape was stolen in Medicine Hat earlier in the evening.

The suspect was also wanted on five outstanding warrants out of Calgary.

The man is facing charges of impaired driving exceeding .08, possession of stolen property, and multiple traffic offences, including careless driving, driving without a licence, driving without registration and leaving the scene of a collision.

He is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

The total estimated damage is $50,000.
