MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man who was arrested on an island in the South Saskatchewan River last month has entered guilty pleas to a pair of charges.

David Marthaller, 40, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and uttering threats, according to Court Check.

Marthaller was arrested on August 19th following a three-hour standoff with police. According to a news release from police, officers were called to the island near Strathcona Park following a dispute between two men on the island.

According to police, Marthaller had a knife and was threatening the second man and officers responding to the incident. The tactical team was called in and used a peper spray canister to respond to the incident.

Marthaller received 45 days in jail, but with credit for time served, still has nine days left on his sentence. He was also fined $200.

Other charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of stolen property under $5,000, were withdrawn.
