Final laps for local drivers at Medicine Hat Speedway

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Warm, blustery conditions for the final spin around the track at the Medicine Hat Speedway on Saturday, closing out their 2018 season in style.

Final points races were held in six divisions, including the Hobby Stock class with Jake Sissons holding off the pack to win the 2018 championship.

Finishing just behind Sissons in the overall standings was Alysha Stratton, who won the opening heat of the night in a crash-filled race.

She said all she had to do was wait for her opening, which arrived in the seventh lap of the track.

“I stayed at the back just because it is the last race day,” said Stratton. “So, there are a lot of drivers that are willing to hit and take you out to get the first place. So, I tried to stay behind and be able to take it at the end.”

James Dumont won the Saturday hobby stock event, beating out both Robbie Gale and Rob Gale Jr. to earn the checkered flag.

As for Stratton, she said the final day of races at the Medicine Hat Speedway presents plenty of challenges in trying to earn points.

“It’s pretty even throughout the whole year, but the last race day does come down to two or three points separating you at the end of the night,” she said. “It is a lot more challenging to pick up those points.”

With the off-season on the horizon, Stratton is still contemplating whether or not to join the hobby stock division once again in 2019.

“There’s talk about changing it into a street stock for next year, but we’re not quite sure yet,” she said.”

If Stratton decides to go into the elite street stock class, she’ll be trying to snatch the points championship from Mitch Stovka, who was crowned the winner on Saturday.

In Saturday’s final street stock heat, Trent Guest crossed the finish line in first place ahead of Trevor Stratton and Conner Hirch.

A second place finish on Saturday was good enough to lock up the renegade trucks championship for Curtis Bigelow, while Tony Lavine was the fastest driver over the weekend.

It was a season to remember for Doug Voisey, winning the baby grands points race with a first place finish on Saturday night.

Second place honours in the main event went to Robyn Abel, with Faith Luther also finding the podium.

Saturday’s champion in the mini cup division was Owen Harbour, but a second place finish from Kaylee Wilkie was enough for her to win the points championship.

Jason Martin was named the overall champion in the IMCA modified division, while Kole George won the main event in the 6/8 cylinder division on Saturday.
