Unemployment rate rises in Medicine Hat in August

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The unemployment rate for Medicine Hat rose to 6 per cent in August, according to recent numbers released by Statistics Canada on Friday.

The number is up from 4.8 per cent reported in July, although Statistics Canada advises against making month-to-month comparisons in Medicine Hat due to the small sample size. Last year at this time, Medicine Hat’s unemployment rate sat at 4 per cent.

Overall in the Medicine Hat and Lethbridge region, the unemployment rose to 5.1 per cent in August after several months of declines.

In Alberta, the unemployment rate sat at 6.7 per cent in August, unchanged from July.

Nationally, the unemployment rate rose to 6 per cent in August, with Statistics Canada reporting a loss of 51,600 net jobs during the month.
